Rescue Procedure (Natasha)

Natasha....since you just went through the procedure of the adopting your new family member, can you give us who don't know some insight on how you guys went about the adoption process??
Natasha

First of all make sure you have a lot of patience. These rescues have a lot of applicants they have to go through. Getting frustrated is not the way to go. I ran into a couple of rescues where it was obvious they were attached to the dog and there was no way they were giving them up. This one lady told me my application was accepted and that we could look at the dog. So I set a date and asked for her address and to this day I have had no reply. Shady, shady.

Petfinder.com is of course the best place to look for a dog. If you don't have a dog I recommend a shelter instead of a rescue. If you have a dog rescues are great because they are in foster homes with other animals and are evaluated. If you live in the Great Lake Area I recommend Great Lakes Mastiff Rescue. Their website is glmr.org. They are fantastic and very helpful. I did not need a home inspection just because they could tell I was a good person and loved dogs.

Also having a fence is big for rescues. I know this is the reason I was turned down or skipped a few times. But I came up with solutions that the board likes.  I have a long lead out in the yard and also I have a track that is fenced in right behind my house. Come up with something! One lady had a dog park right up the street and that was her solution for exercise and it worked. We are in the works of getting a fence we just need the equity to do it.

If I can think of anything else I will let you know and feel free to ask me anything. I'm new to rescue, but I know a few things.
Courtney

Thank you so much for explaining that to us.  I have heard that rescue is a hard place to start, especially if you don't have a fence. I am so glad you got around it.

Keep us updated!!
Tara

Thank you so much for sharing maybe this will help someone else someday.  I do know of a few more families that haven't joined us on here just yet that have first hand experience with GLMR also themselves and are very pleased.
Natasha

Yeah Marty was really nice and she has a great heart. She is also a breeder of Mastiffs and French Bulldogs. Megan, who has hooch, has 16 dogs at the moment. 10 are puppies from her litter. I can't wait to see them next week.
Natasha

Before I forget here is link of Hooch. This is what he looked like when they picked him up. As you can see he wasn't fed enough. No wonder he killed a chicken!

I am so glad Hooch found you guys!!  He now has a place where he will be loved and spoiled!!
Natasha

Its kind of sad though when I look at the baby pictures of your dogs. It's like a missed that part of him. But then I remember no more sleepless nights with the puppy crying, and peeing in the house. I got lucky with Zoe she only peed! WHEW! I get a great dog who's already potty trained! I can't complain!
Liz

Natasha, I have to ask what area Hooch came from. I was at work talking to another employee about past and present pets and a lady over heard me mention that I had a mastiff. She rushed over to tell me about her neighbor's mastiff, who this lady claims was the best dog in the world. She said that they got rid of him because he ate a chicken. She also mentioned that he looked under fed. She was upset that they got rid of him, because he used to come to her house and play with her and her dog. I thought of you immediately and wanted to know if this could possibly be the same dog. I am from Versailles, Oh. Any rescue near or in Ohio would lead me to believe that this is the same dog.
Courtney

WOW!!  That is unreal...it really sounds like your co-worker was talking about Hooch.
Natasha

Hi Liz. Yup that was Hooch. He came from that area. He's here in Miamisburg now with us. We picked him up yesterday from his foster mom. He is doing so well. He is the sweetest dog. I can't believe it. I have no regrets with him. Zoe is still adjusting, but is doing better.

His tail doesn't stop wagging ever and I always feel bad getting up because he'll get up and follow me. He's great and fattening up nicely!
Courtney

I am so glad he is home!!  YAYYY!!  CONGRATS!!!

Post pictures when you can and keep us posted about his progress!!
Mastiff Mommy

Hooch's foster mommy here, well, old foster mommy, Natasha picked him up on Saturday so he is with his new mommy now! Anyway, the name of the town where we went to pick him up is escaping me right now, but I do know for certain that the vet he last saw before coming in to rescue was in Versailles.
Liz

Wow! That is so is so weird!!!
Natasha

Such a small world. Also good news!! Hooch is up to 135! WOO HOO! He still needs to put on some weight but I believe he was only 115 before.
