Pedigree'sFor those of you who breed.....How much play does a pedigree have for your thoughts on breeding? Do you research, do you have a certain pedigree you are striving towards in your breeding program?
For the puppy buyers......do you research pedigree's? Do you have a certain pedigree that you tend to gravitate towards?
Would love to hear your thoughts on pedigree and how much of a bearing it has on you, wheather you are a puppy buyer or breeder.

Ok many who already know me will already know how I feel about this but for those of you that don't I will share my ideas.
When I got my first mastiff I didnt look at anything other than the obvious seen by the eye. I have dealt with Mastiff with not so good temperments because of it and other mastiffs who don't really truely resemble what a mastiff should be.
Zoey was our first Mastiff that I got from a reputable breeder and that was all it took. There is definately a difference it looks, temperment and so on......
When I am planning a breeding the pedigree is first and foremost what I look at and from there I look at the over all dog. I look at what the lines have produced together and then make my decision. A lot of breeders put a lot of work behind the scenes into making that breeding decision.

I will be honest, I did look at looks first! I looked at Courtney's web site and liked how Kollow looked. I like the smother face over the wrinkly face. I looked at pics of show dogs and did research on the breed in general. I then ask questions to several breeders. I learned as much as I could from every breeder until I decided on one. I then looked at the temperament of the breeder. If a dog is raised in the right environment, most times it can keep aggression at bey. I liked that Courtney was so open and kind. She was very helpful. Thanks Courtney!!! I highly recommend her to any new puppy buyer, if nothing else, just to talk to. I would have liked to meet both parents, but the times just never seemed right. All in all, I think I got one heck of a pup. Everyone that sees him thinks the world of him. The only one that had any trouble accepting him was my sister, and that was most likely because she had to get rid of her dog a short while ago. She did not do her research and got a Border collie mix for her apartment in town, not a good mix!

I will tell you all how I feel, since I asked the question....lol
I ALWAYS look at a pedigree for a dog. I know what kind of lines I like and what I don't like. If there is a dog in the pedigree that I don't know what he/she looks like, I go find pictures, information, health testing, ect. to see what this dog has to offer.
When I plan a breeding, I look at pedigree FIRST then I look at the dog to see if it has qualitys to add. If this dog has a great pedigree but is a train wreck in looks, I don't totally go the other direction. I look at the dog/bitch I am breeding and if they are very strong in that area I might consider.
I try to find a suitable match that has something to offer my bitch/stud and vice versa with a very desireable pedigree that I would be proud of in my breeding program.

I look at as far back as I can find, however to me the last six are most important and try to be in contact with the owners of those dogs as some faults, or personalities are not made public,it's nice to hear from the owners of the dogs directly what they think of there lines, dogs, personalities, faults and atributes, as well I contact mentors and friends of mine with much more experience than myself, to give their un-sugar coated opinions, i look at what each dog has for faults and attributes and look at the consistency in the lines, where if it has changed, what each dog brought or could bring to a breeding, as well as the faults that they could bring. as well as of course the health testing of the dogs.
I am a pedigree junky and love to study photos. : )
