Dewclaws?

If I want to show eventually, can I have his dewclaws removed? I know that some breeds do not allow any modifications.
Courtney

I have seen many discussions on this issue. Somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you can have thier dew claws removed.

My personal preference is that I don't think they should be removed unless an infection ect. occurs.

I believe Kelly had Kaboose's done...she might be able to enlighten us on a personal note!!  Kelly.....all yours!!   Cool

Ahhh hemmm memememememee

Ok, I am a firm believer after what I went through that they should be done a couple of days after being born, that said I am not a breeder so I can not judge!!! The first time we took Kaboose to the vet our doctor told us that his were already a worry, that they stuck far out and that they were loose. He said give it some time and we can look at them when he is a little older. Well we take Kaboose to a wooded dog park. One day his dewclaw got snagged. It wasn't bad at all, it could have been a lot worse from my understanding. So we had them removed and I had to sleep next to him to make sure he wasn't moving for a week. He wouldn't sleep with his e collar on, it was a mess but glad I did it. Yes you can still show and all that fun stuff. I really do think that when I get another puppy I am going to ask the breeder to have my puppies removed when it is simple, and I will pay for it!

Should I post my info on bloat as well? : )
Courtney

Kelly....start a new thread on bloat please, we will let you head that one!!

Thank you for sharing your reasoning with us on why Kaboose got his done. I have never even thought to remove them from my guys.  Like I said, I think it's personal peference or "health" related.

Ok, you've got to give me some time on that one. It's a long story and again I get a lot of criticism on it.

Well, with my Mom working at the Vet office, she sees all kinds of problems with dew claws. She mentioned to me that his stuck out and were kind of a danger to children as he loves to shake everyones hand, but he has horrible aim and ends up hitting us on the leg or arm and he hits kids in the face. It is only a matter of time until it scratches someone. No matter how often I clip or file them, they are always so sharp!   Shocked
Kelly

Liz that was another major issue with Kaboose and his declaws sticking out, he has dominate paw, he was getting it caught in blankets, scratching Tim and I. Like I said I am happy I did it. We saw some pictures of declaws that were snagged and torn, ICK!

There really is no reason to have them removed, we are showing and have them, they are a working breed, and therefor it is exceptable for them to have them. Dews are supposed to be removed a few days after birth if that is your preference, as it is painful. unless there is a reason other than showing.
