English Setters are the most expensive dogs to keep and cost an average £6,955 in vets' bills during their lifetimes, according to a survey.
The dogs, which generally live for about 11 years, need to be taken to the vet at least seven times a year at a cost of more than £600 annually, found pet insurer Esure.
English Setters are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, often suffer from an underactive thyroid gland and in later life are vulnerable to cancer.
Great Danes came in as the second most expensive breed, costing owners more than £6,600, followed by poodles, who racked up vets' bills of more than £6,500.
Rottweilers and doberman pinschers were also among the costliest dogs to keep in the poll of 3,000 dog owners.
However, the healthiest dog is the mastiff which costs its owners just £1,302 in its lifetime. Other robust breeds include the Newfoundland, which has an average vets' bill of £1,350 and border collies, which cost about £1,538...
